What do you identify yourself as?
Growing up [Muslim], that’s what I was raised with, and now that I learn more and more, I identify as a Muslim because I am open to everybody. I love everybody equally — both Muslims and non-Muslims.
Do you think there is a negative perception against your religion and people who practice it in America?
I think people’s perspective on Muslims is definitely not good because of some political candidates. There has been bad but then there has been good, too. There has been a platform for Muslims. Some people who thought Islam was bad have new perspective about the religion since Trump. There is more publicity about Islam and because of that, it’s our duty as Muslims to teach others more about the religion. Educating people is very important.
What are some stereotypical judgements that people have made because of your religion and ethnicity?
To be honest I don’t get that many stereotypical judgments — such as Muslim being a”terrorist” kinds of stuff.
If you could change people’s perspective of your religious community, what would you change?
People think that we hate other religion. I want to change their perspective into thinking that it’s a very peaceful religion. And, the terrorist organization — like ISIS — is not a true representation of Islam.
How has wearing Hijab changed who you are today?
Just in my personal experience it has given me more confidence. It allows people to judge me for who I am intellectually rather than physically — on the outside.
What are some of the benefits of wearing a Hijab?
Not having to worry about your hair.
What are some challenges of wearing a Hijab?
Sometimes not wearing a certain way is judged by other Muslims.
In three words, how would you describe your your religious belief?
Peaceful, nonjudgmental, and kind.
What is one advice that you would give to people?
Step outside of your comfort zone.
Most importantly, what makes you happy?
Having self approval makes me happy. Knowing that I don’t have to conform to other people’s opinions. But if I am content with my life and decisions then I am happy.
