If you could describe yourself in three words, what would they be?
Quirky, curious, and creative
What impression do you want others to make of you?
I like to be seen as funny. I just think it’s a positive energy to bring in a group…humor is like a good route for me.
If they made a movie out of your life, what would it be called?
“Zoinks” because I say it during awkward moments in my life.
What is a life-changing movie for you?
I have two… one is Hotel Rwanda and the other one is The King’s Speech.
What makes a good movie?
So many things…mostly the writing, directing, and casts. Good complex writing. Directing because it’s nice to see unique movies, and it’s cool to see artistic differences in movies. How different directors can make a same story different. Casts because they bring life to the writings. It’s pretty crucial.
What was the worst movie that you’ve seen and why?
I’ve seen a lot of bad movies. There’s this one called The Switch. It was really awful; there was no momentum. It was easy cheap script. It just didn’t work.
What does feminism mean?
It means equality of the sexes — economically, socially, politically, and in other social institutions in the world.
What are some negative perceptions people have on feminism?
Some people find it extreme because until like recently, when feminism comes up in pop culture, it’s always “exaggerated”; women are revealing, not shaved, or hating on men. Maybe because of this reason, people think it’s extreme. I think some people find it extreme because it doesn’t deal with intersectionality. That’s a pretty big issue in feminism. White women have taken over feminism. They have neglected race and socioeconomic status. Some people are dividing based on privilege, which is a legitimate issue. Also, I think some people are threatened by women having options because they might not understand the whole concept, which is completely understandable.
How do you think we can unify all women — regardless of race, socioeconomic status, and etc.?
To start, hold feminists into higher standards while compassionate and open minded about their upbringing mindset. For me, I felt guilty of part taking white feminism. Gradually, I sort of realized how mainstream feminism does neglect the different experiences of different women. Not all are white women who have the same struggles. Having conversations about these issues are helpful. And, surrounding yourself to different people is really beneficial.
What are some problems that you see among feminists today?
I guess like some feminists can be hypocritical. The root of all feminism is that all women should have a choice and not go with rigid rules. Some people might look at a stay-home mom and say that she’s not doing it right. And others might acknowledge her choice. There is this underline-culture still that might not necessarily be true. There are a lot of women who are still reluctant to differences.
What advice would you give to a young aspiring feminist?
You mean me? I think I started to acknowledged myself as a feminist since eleventh grade in high school. The feminist I was then is nothing like feminist I am today. Nothing but good can come from going deep into it. So, know that it’s a learning process and it’s a constant changing thing for you.
What makes you happy?
Colors. That can relate to colorful lifestyle. I don’t limit myself to people that are just like me — personality wise and background wise. Put some color in your life folks!
