This interviewee is a cellist at symphony orchestra. At first, he learned to play the violin but everyday after school, he practiced cello, and now he’s a professional cellist. He can play the viola, too.
What is your favorite thing about cello?
I like the versatility of the instrument.
What is your least favorite thing about cello?
Playing fifths and octaves.
What is your favorite piece to play and why?
Debussy Sonata because it leaves a lot of room for performers to be expressive and inventive.
What is the most important thing to do during practice?
Be mentally engaged. You can easily waste time if you aren’t focused on what you’re doing.
Why do you think music is so hard to master?
I wouldn’t say that it’s a difficult thing to master. It just takes some time. 10,000 hours, as they say.
Do you think one’s character can affect interpretation of music?
Yes definitely. For example, my private teacher is very detailed oriented and meticulous so his approach to music is more of a methodical approach than an emotional one.
Why do you think classical music is not popular among young people?
It’s not very easy to listen to. You can’t really passively listen to a piece of classical music. You have to give it your full attention, otherwise you’ll completely miss it. And even then you won’t catch everything. For example, I can listen to a pop song once and sing it back to you afterwards. It might take me four or five listens to be able to retain the melody of a classical piece.
What should we do to change that?
Change the concert-going experience. It’s extremely boring. Having to sit in a chair in a complete silence and having to dress up, and not being able to clap when we want to. It should be more like a rock concert!
What was the best advice that you have ever gotten from a music teacher?
Don’t work hard when you get on stage as in preparing for recital you can work hard. On the stage, don’t think about it and just play.
And, what is your advice to all musicians?
A lot of people get frustrated when they practice and it isn’t going right. So recognize that some point that you will be able to play well. Just be patient.
If you were to make an album, what would be your theme?
French Sonatas like impressionism. Or, tango music.
Most importantly, what makes you happy?
A lot of things make me happy.
