music as way of healing.

By

This ordinary is majoring in music therapy and performance.

Why do you think music can be used to heal and help people?

Music kind of provides a new medium for people to express themselves. Thinking and speaking of your actions is hard. For some people, it’s hard to voice what you are thinking or feeling. It can be hard to talk face-to-face with people, so music helps. Music gets people to express more easily. In terms of healing, personally when I am stressed, angry, and etc. playing violin numbs any bad feelings about life.

What is it about music therapy that makes you so passionate?

I never knew what I wanted to do with music. So when I started to volunteer with kids with disabilities, I found my passion for serving others. When I compare that with music, I can use it to help people. My love for music combined with my passion to serve is what I want to do. To see someone accomplish something non-musical through music–like just singing a song to them–that is what’s great about music therapy.

Do you think our emotions affect the ways we perceive or interpret music?

I definitely think so… Whether you are feeling sad or not, music can also affect your emotions. You can go from happy to crying simply from listening to someone play the violin. It kind of goes both ways. Music always tends to change me.

If you had to stick to one piece to play, for the rest of you life, what would it be?

It’s hard because I haven’t played many pieces yet. But Thais Meditation will always hold a special place in my heart.

Do you think music is a language?

Yes. Kind of like how music helps people. Usually words aren’t enough but playing a beautiful piece of music–has the things that you have experienced, felt, thought, and said. You shouldn’t be playing music to sound nice and pleasing to the ears but try to say something to the audience.

What is a song that describes or represents you?

Brahms Violin Sonata No. 3 in D minor

What is your advice to all musicians?

Always love what you do otherwise there is no point of doing it.

When was the worst audition experience?

All of them. Well, the worst one was my second time auditioning for All-State. First year, I didn’t work hard. But the second year, I worked so hard like I practiced as soon as the excerpts came out and had extra lessons. When I found out that I didn’t make it, I cried so hard, and I don’t usually cry.

If you could create your own music note, symbols, signs, and etc., what would it be?

Eye-glasses with Harry Potter scar!

Most importantly, what makes you happy?

Warm brownies.
