What are some challenges that you experience as a person of color in America?
The fact that I have to think about how I say, move, dress, and act. Otherwise, I will be judged.
Do you think there is such thing as white privilege?
Yes.
Why do you think [white privilege] still exists?
Because people are afraid to accept the fact that it still exists or try to think that white privilege is not there, so it’s just left unfixed.
What are some things that we can do to change it?
First, people need to accept that it exists. And once that happens, opportunities should spread among all races.
If you could create an organization for POC, what would it be?
Since the media doesn’t portray good role models for certain minorities, the organization would teach them about ways and opportunities to become successful.
When was the time when you really felt segregated or unaccepted due to your race?
In high school because there was racial division in each class. Many minority students were not treated fairly compared to the white students. And white students were socially standing so their voices were heard more, which made them in charge of the school, clubs, and classes.
Do you think there are problems with institutions trying to “diversify” (i.e. affirmative action, tokenism)?
There are pros and cons of diversity. There are benefits, like affirmative action, it allows more minorities in a school instead of making a white-dominant place. But, I feel like sometimes forced diversity turns into a “show and tell.” They try to prove that they are not racist and diverse. Sometimes, when you force diversity you are not really learning about minorities but can become a token in their show.
What is your advice to POC?
Don’t let people prevent you from what you want to do; your race doesn’t determine your success. There are challenges but doesn’t mean that all opportunities are lost either.
What makes you happy?
Watching movies and listening to Belle and Sebastian.
