This ordinary just finished her first year of college. We drank tea at my patio and I started interviewing her.
How would you describe yourself?
Visually, I have brown skin, curly hair, and I am short and skinny! Personally, I am outgoing and I like to talk a lot…I am quirky, weird, and make stupid jokes because I like to make people laugh.
How do you like college?
Good. It was a journey — finding about who I am.
What is one piece of advice to students?
People talk to hear their own voice…every time you want to speak, don’t. Pause and think about whether you really need to speak.
If you could teach any subject in college, what would it be and why?
I would want to teach history [pause] like really interesting history. Teach about the Mongols. Or maybe English and Sociology. Let’s talk about gender inequality!
If you could live in a painting for a day, what would it be?
This is so hard! I would want to live in one of Degas’ ballerina pieces. I’d want to be a lady in the audience, complete with fancy feathers in her hat and an elegant dress.
What scene in a movie would you like to live in?
I feel like many female characters in movies have a tragic life and storyline. Can I just live my own life?
What was the biggest challenge that you’ve experienced?
Everyday is a challenge because you have to stay calm and stay cool even though there are a lot of things going on in the world.
If you could change anything in the world, what would you change?
I would make the colonial era never happened and see how world dynamics change. I would stop slavery so that racism isn’t a big factor in American politics. I would also stop sexism too. I would change the Congress so that the majority isn’t Republican. I would make voting mandatory.
One word that you wish people would use less:
Awkward, unique, and special. [They’re] so over used that [they don’t] have meaning anymore. I care a lot about words!
What’s a song that describes your life?
“Seven Years” by Norah Jones.
