higher education, worth it?

By

This person graduated from college two years ago. She is still looking for a job.

What was your favorite part about college?

The opportunity to stretch my comfort zone and got to interact with a lot of different people, perspectives, and ideas. And that’s how you grow.

What is one advice that you would give to a college freshman?

Don’t put yourself in a box. Allow yourself to grow out of people.

What does higher education mean to you?

I currently have a negative view of higher education because it has a value but we’re told to do it for getting a degree so that it can do all these things for you — but, that’s not the case. We focus on the skills that we need to get a job. Not just filing and job skills but also networking skills.

What’s the hardest thing about post-college life?

Being in school gives you certain levels of stability. But once you graduate, it takes at least six months to get a job. You have no idea what you are doing, who you are, or what you are.

Do you have regrets from college?

As of right now, it would be that I didn’t have as much fun as I wanted because I was so focused on my academics. I was only able to socialize in meal times and believed that my hard work in academics would pay more, but that is not true.

What would you say to students who are confident with their study in college?

More likely than not, life is gonna punch you in the face. You’re making these plans in college, but the person that you are after college is different. It’s miserable. I am 25 and I am still living at my home.

What should we do?

If you are an employer, be more open and give more shots to new college graduates. There is this predatory internship market. But that’s not really possible for most people.

Do you consider yourself as an optimist or a pessimist?

It depends on the day!

Do you doubt yourself?

All the time!

What did you do to overcome those challenges after graduating from college?

I was completely stressed out.

Do you think a person functions better in a schedule?

It depends on the person. But I am a schedule-driven person.

Do you have any life-changing plans right now?

No.

What is the hardest thing you are currently dealing with ?

It’s so expensive! You can plan, but if you get sick or if you need medicine…that costs money.

What motivates you today?

Not wanting to live at home anymore or not wanting to drive my grandmother’s minivan.

If you could start college all over again, would you do it?

Yeah. I would do somethings differently, but I wouldn’t be who I am if it weren’t for what I’ve done, met, or seen before.

What do you think your challenge (at the moment) is teaching you?

It’s teaching me how to cry at night without my roommate hearing me.

What song describes your life?

“Life’s a Bitch” by Shooter

What makes you happy?

Friends.
